CD Baby members are invited to our new empty warehouse in Portland Oregon this Saturday April 7 from 1pm-3pm for an informal meet-and-greet, hosted by Derek Sivers and the CD Baby crew.

In a room full of musicians and various music-biz types, it's best to bring some business cards and CDs, and be prepared to tell the room what you're looking for, and what you have to offer.

For example: in past get-togethers like this, someone will stand up and say, "My name is Michelle - I'm a flamenco guitarist, available for hire if you need, and my band is looking for a photographer." Then someone else will stand up and say, "I'm here visiting from New York, but if anyone wants to gig-swap to help my duo book more gigs in Portland, I can help you book more gigs in New York."

Also, there will be a 30-minute talk on "How to Call Attention to Your Music" by Derek Sivers.

DATE:
Saturday, April 7

TIME:
1pm to 3pm. (But please arrive between 1 and 1:30 so you don't miss too much.)

ADDRESS:
5929 NE 80 Ave
Portland OR 97218

DIRECTIONS:
(we're kind of hard to find)
#1 - GO TO THE PORTLAND AIRPORT
#2 - LAST STOPLIGHT, before entering the airport, is NE 82nd Ave - turn LEFT.
(or if you go too far, into the airport, come back out and turn RIGHT instead)
#3 - After the 2nd light on 82nd Ave, VEER RIGHT towards Red Lion, towards Ramada Hotel.
#4 - Follow the road right at Ramada, and left immediately after.

CD Baby parking lot is the last one on the right. Park anywhere in the lot or on the street. We have most of the building, but the door you want is 5929, near the back of the parking lot.

FOOD and DRINK:
We'll have a BBQ grill making hamburgers, veggie-burgers and hot dogs. We'll order some pizzas and have a cooler of drinks.

NOTE:
It's just a big open warehouse. It's supposed to be warm on Saturday, but bring a jacket in case. If you feel like bringing a box of cookies or snacks for all, that would be lovely.

    •  It was nice. A good way to hear what folks are up to in the Portland area. It's empowering. I think I speak on behalf of a lot of people when I say, that Derek's generosity with his knowledge and openness to possibility is truly appreciated.
    •  fun and friendly. beer.
    • Branden Daniel (+2 guests)
Thank you to Derek, Alex and the whole CD baby staff. You guys are awesome and very generous with your time! I appreciated the oppportunity to interact with you and other music minded locals. The whole thing was an excellent & unique opportunity. I hope you will consider doing one annually! Branden Daniel & Everybody Gets Laid
    •  Derek rocks and so does CD Baby.....all great people
    •  Real nice! Thanks to Derek for the shout out! And Alex is cool.
    •  So nice to see and meet so many Portland musicians, in so many different genres.
    •  It was a great networking event, but it would have been nice to have added more "BBQ" and music to the event. I am very glad to have gone, though, and I would go again. Thanks!!
    •  I always appreciate Derek's friendly wisdom. Also the way he gives required direction to open-style attendee announcements, inquiries. This helps with "shyness" barriers and the strategy of honing in on your best contacts among 200 people. Creative folks really deserve this kind of networking and I believe we can make good use of it. I personally made several contacts there and shared my Eugene contacts with an attendee. Really enjoyed attaching faces to friendly phone voices like Jamie's at FilmBaby (AND he does great BBQ!) As a newcomer to the Portland area I really encourage more of these facilitating events. THANKS, Derek and the astounding, super-friendly CDBaby Staff!
    •  Fantastic! I had a great time and made some great connections.
    •  I made some very good music, producer connection.
    •  Organizers seemed friendly and well-meaning, but the event was too large, impersonal, and uncomfortable.
    •  Derek has assembled a great team. They all seem very into their biz, which from this musician's perspective really helps and I appreciate it very much. It makes my life and the reach of my music much easier. Yay CD, (and Host) Baby.
    •  Derek continues to do great things for independent musicians. To mix metaphors, the burgers and pizza are frosting on the cake.
    •  It was an excellent event - I just wish it could have been longer!
    •  I got some very useful information from talking to some of the people in attendance. Unfortunately, there were people in the back of the room talking to each other and I couldn't hear what most of the people were saying when Derek was leading the information session. Overall, though, it was a fun event.
    •  Got some great internet links, talked with lots of musicians (some I had heard of, some not)
    •  Derek is generous with time and energy; people were open to sharing information; it was hard to hear announcements, but I did manage to write down a few names for networking later. Thanks for the burger!
    •  I thought it was very generous of Derek. I really appreciate that I got to talk to Derek, Anthony (the lawyer) and a bunch of other people.
    •  Good networking opportunity.
    •  Well meaning. too chaotic, couldn't hear halfof whatpeople said without microphones.
    •  Wonderful opportunity to meet people, if one is bold enough to strike up conversations. It helped when we were asked to share Who and Why we were there, but it was difficult to see who was talking and to hear everything that they were saying in the space we were standing in. Food was great! Thanks!

a bit awkward and uninspiring until derek began making introductions and moderating the big groupshare thing. i think a little portable (or permanent) stage where artists could have volunteered to play 'a' song would have been a good icebreaker and created a more convivial, comforting, and festive atmosphere overall.
    •  A great idea--wonderful for musicians to meet each other and compare notes/needs/hopes/dreams. Many thanks to CDBaby.
    •  maybe everyone puts their name in a hat and you pick three or four.that person has one track played at the event.music would be nice after mingling.maybe a mic for the speaker.
    • David Rangel, JR (+1 guest)
We enjoyed everybody's conversation and appreciate all the help. We made a few connections and hopefully something will happen. Special thanks to Derek for being such a gentleman.
    •  All is good. I'll bring pen and paper and/or my voice recorder next time. I couldn't hear some of the people. A cordless mic setup would have been nice. I met some great musicians. I'd like to see something like this well before next year.
    •  Got some good contacts out of it, and am following up on them. Thank you, Derek, for spending some time on that area in which we most often fall on our faces; namely, self-promotion. Got a lot of useful advice out of that one.
    • mary flower (+1 guest)
thanks, derek, for forcing us all to network and giving us a place to ramble. i really wanted to meet you but you were constantly engaged. thanks for putting a little heart and soul and direction into an industry that has grown too big for its boots. keep up the great work! mary flower
    •  It was good to meet so many folks in the same business and hear different ideas.
    •  Great to see old friends and meet some new people. Might have some other avenue of announcing oneself without relying on one person to call on you during the event. Open mike, perhaps?
