CD Baby members are invited to Hotel Cafe in central Hollywood next SUNDAY April 22nd, 2007 at 1pm (done by 3pm) - for an informal meet-and-greet, hosted by CD Baby founder/president Derek Sivers.

(NOTE : PLEASE ONLY COME TO ONE OF THE TWO : SATURDAY OR SUNDAY. Both will be the same, but we don't have enough room for everyone on one day.)

In a room full of musicians and various music-biz types, it's best to bring some business cards and CDs, and be prepared to tell the room what you're looking for, and what you have to offer.

For example: in past get-togethers like this, someone will stand up and say, "My name is Michelle - I'm a flamenco guitarist, available for hire if you need, and my band is looking for a photographer." Then someone else will stand up and say, "I'm here visiting from New York, but if anyone wants to gig-swap to help my duo book more gigs in Los Angeles, I can help you book more gigs in New York."

Also, there will be a 30-minute talk on "How to Call Attention to Your Music" by Derek Sivers.

Hotel Cafe is doing this as a private event so we have the entire venue to ourselves. (No live performances, though : this is just for conversational meet-and-greet.)

Who attended?

  • 265 attendees
    •  one girl said something interesting at and on our cd baby pages can you set it up so we can put up a music video if possible to help sell the album
    • Cedric "Cnote" Buard (+2 guests)
Thanks Meetup and CD Baby... you should have more FREE networking functions. Indie music needs the support!!!
    •  Very informative. Derek gave an excellent speech on experiences and how to be heard.
    •  Consider having a meeting in the Bay Area. It was great to have Derek at the meeting but if he is busy (or in London) maybe someone else could coordinate it. I like the networking aspect. The meeting ran late and I had to leave at 3 to catch a plane back to the Bay Area.
    •  Very informative.
    • Darci Monet (+1 guest)
Okay it was more crowded than I anticipated (I think everyone who skipped Saturday came Sunday! lol) and I actually suck at introducing myself to people...so that felt a little crazy. However, I was able to hand out quite a few cards (I'm a vocal coach) and have some nice conversations and it was great to hear Derek's words of wisdom. I came away inspired and energized! If anyone missed me, drop me an email at [masked] or visit my site www.darcimonet.com. :-)
    •  It was a great opportunity to share, and meet other songwriter/artists, as well as to learn about producers in the area. It was great to get the latest from Derek. His insights really helped.
    •  Had a lovely time. It's a great opportunity to meet fellow artists and industry people. I think Derek has a wealth of knowledge and understanding of this business and greatly admire and appreciate that he takes the time to stay involved in his company and continue to think of ways to help and unite the people that are on CD Baby. I'm always interested in what he has to say and always take some gems away with me. He's approachable, friendly, interested. He's created an amazing venue for all of us. Hats off!
    •  Where 's the pinini's
    •  Great energy & people! Thanks, Derek... You rock!
    •  the event was good to have. the lighting in the venue was extremely dim and made it impossible to read anything that you were handed. it was suppose to be for "networking" yet it was set so dark like if it was a nightclub setting. then people were drinking alcohol excessively. there were not enough tables for people to sit and converse. i enjoyed the speech by derek, it showed how quickly this business has progressed.
    •  In my opinion the event was very well put together and i was very happy i went. I met people in film placement that i never new would be there and other promotional web sites as well. On top of that i feel even more connected to the cd baby family because i meet others on the site including derek silvers, i had a chance to shake his hand. He was a great guy in person, easy to talk to and very willing to hear you out and help you with the best answer / advise he could.
    •  Insightful, honest, great marketing strategy. I was uncomfortable with other vendors marketing their wares i.e. Agents, Managers, pitchmen, other online distributors, but to Derek's credit he seemed not to be fazed by this. I was confused by the issue about Radio no longer considered a good marketing tool, however it makes sense for the independent label and artist to not bank on getting a major record deal in this day and age. I like the analogy to hitting the target center mass in the bullseye however the target has outgrown itself, and that Derek considers the best music is the Weirder the Better....
    •  EXCELLENT
    •  It was one of the most important event I have attended yet, for it was informative and I mate the right people who gave the right input on the things I needed to no. it was great, Thank You!
    •  It was awesome!
    •  I met alot of cool people including Derik Silvers.
    •  had day planned until i got the e-mail saying the event was overbooked and to skip if possible. I decided to make a brief appearance as cat in the hat. the place was packed so only stayed a couple minutes.
