CD Baby members are invited to Blakes on Telegraph in central Berkeley next SUNDAY April 29th, 2007 at 1pm (done by 3pm) - for an informal meet-and-greet, hosted by CD Baby founder/president Derek Sivers.

In a room full of musicians and various music-biz types, it's best to bring some business cards and CDs, and be prepared to tell the room what you're looking for, and what you have to offer.

For example: in past get-togethers like this, someone will stand up and say, "My name is Michelle - I'm a flamenco guitarist, available for hire if you need, and my band is looking for a photographer." Then someone else will stand up and say, "I'm here visiting from LA, but if anyone wants to gig-swap to help my duo book more gigs in the Bay Area, I can help you book more gigs in LA."

Also, there will be a 30-minute talk on "How to Call Attention to Your Music" by Derek Sivers.

COME HUNGRY, and order lunch when you arrive. Blake's is kindly hosting this for no special charge on the understanding that most of us will be ordering food and drink.

Who attended?

  • 117 attendees
    •  Our host was charming, friendly and gave lots of great information. He then encouraged us to meet each other. I don' t think the number of people who attended was expected.
    •  Way overcrowded. Many people downstairs at tables that didn't bother trying to squeeze into the upstairs room. People standing on stairs straining to hear, out of line of sight. I kept waiting for Derek to get the thing started. I was hoping to ask some questions about the arrangement with Snocap. Gave up went downstairs to breathe. Forget about lunch. Can you say Fire Marshall?
    •  This event was good for networking. It's nice to be around people that believe in there work.
    •  Some networking, not in my alley mostly but a great chance to meet Derek and congratulate him for his CD Baby idea and giving some suggestions on how to improve it.
    •  The meeting space was a bit small for the amount of people. It was difficult to hear anyone who wasn't on your half of the room. Nevertheless, I did meet some people and heard some interesting things.
    •  Worthwhile networking event. I enjoyed it. Derek Seivers was very good.
    •  I thought the event was quite nice, with a very diverse selection of talented people doing all sorts of things relating to the music business. I managed to hook up with a fellow recording engineer who may have future opportunities for other engineers when his studio is up & running. We will be in touch in any event. Plus I also met a songwriter who is looking for collaborators. It was also really nice to finally meet Derek Sivers & say hello. I got more than I expected from this.
    •  Very crowded location and hard to hear some of the participants but still worth meeting people
    •  Too many folks crowded into a very small space made it impossible to converse and hear those near you and even MORE impossible (esp for someone with two knee replacements!) to move about and meet freely ... the "inspirational" talk by Derek Sivers could not be heard by most (and covered "covered" ground) nor could those who tried to introduce themselves as being "helpful" to musicians (bring a portable PA system!) ... better planning is needed next time
    •  It was great meeting Derek Sivers. He's chock full of excellent ideas & advice, and is a very generous soul. It was also amazing to meet the diverse music community in the east bay. It really made me feel like part of a greater music community & proud to be part of the current independent artist tradition. ~Chris Barnes Stark Ravens Historical players http://www.starkr...
    •  Crowded, but excellent. Still need a way to hear Derek
    •  Derek was great, informative, generous and easy to talk to. The other event participants were informed and interested in sharing ideas.
    •  I need to meet publishers and writers and, although I met about 12 people, I only met other artists, which wasn't at all helpful to me.
    •  Cool people. Cool place.....
    •  As I told Derek at the event. It was great. His opening comments were right on, as if he had been talking directly to me. There were plenty of great people to meet and talk with. And frankly if it weren't for CD Baby, there would be no way for me to really put my work out there. I'm thoroughly impressed. All I can say is Thank You very much!

I wish less time was spent on CREATIVE input...and I wish more time was spent on actual marketing
    •  Great vibe. Feeling of support without competitiveness. Really appreciated Derek's words of guidance.
    •  I enjoyed this even very much and made some potentially creative connections. I appreciated Derek for setting it up and for creating CDBaby. Great job! Thanks!
    •  The setting was not good. The idea was good but there should be sections for the genre of music so the aritist can get a more personal feel as well as the group session.
    •  Place is a rathole. I left after two minutes. I don't want to interact with anyone under such Dickensonian condtions.
    •  Too crowded; couldn't hear speaker (music competing from restaurant below);no microphone; not enough chairs, claustrophobic, poor food; left early; very disappointed in CD Bab!.
    •  It was inspiring to meet Derek and hear him speak about aspects of the music biz we have all thoughto of and many of us gotten hung up on. Also nice to network with other musicians, a rarity these days.
    •  Good idea you guys are on to something good
    •  Would've been nice to have the bigger room downstairs.
    •  WE LOVED DEREK!!!!! The information was helpful and we left inspired. THANK YOU!! and big hugs to Derek and staff at CD Baby
    •  Difficulty hearing speakers but a good meeting.
