CD Baby members are invited to Connolly's Pub and Restaurant in midtown Manhattan THIS SATURDAY May 5th at 1pm (done by 3pm) - for an informal meet-and-greet, hosted by CD Baby founder/president Derek Sivers.

(NOTE : we are doing the same get-together on both Saturday and Sunday, May 5 and 6, but please come to only one.)

In a room full of musicians and various music-biz types, it's best to bring some business cards and CDs, and be prepared to turn on your extroverted side for a couple hours, and introduce yourself to some new people.

For example: in past get-togethers like this, someone will stand up and say, "My name is Michelle - I'm a flamenco guitarist, available for hire if you need, and my band is looking for a photographer." Then someone else will stand up and say, "I'm launching a new music magazine and we're open for new submissions in all genres."

Also, there will be a 30-minute talk on "How to Call Attention to Your Music" by Derek Sivers.

Who attended?

  • 340 attendees
    •  Wish there were nametags - was hard to find and id people I wanted to find.
    •  What a family! I know that was just a fraction. We were all their for one cause, to take our babies to that next level It was so exciting, I talked to some great people who were very sucessful and others like me just starting out so I didn't feel to bad, but I got some great pointers which I will consider. Thanks for a delightful afternoon. One thing I know I have to hold on to is my faith.
    •  Good networking. Every time I thought about leaving, I spoke to someone new who was interesting or fun. I stayed until 3:30.
    •  What a tremendous opportunity to meet other members of cdbaby. I was aware of the many talented people who have music on cdbaby but I learned today how nice they are in person. I made quite a few new friends and hope to keep in touch and help them along in their endeavor. It was GREAT to meet Mr. Derek Sivers and to shake his hand and say thank in person for creating cdbaby. So many of us INDIE artists are living out our musical dreams........it was a GREAT DAY, Sam Stray. out our musical dreams.....it was a GREAT day, Sam Stray.
    •  Jhorndog had fun
    • derek simmons (+1 guest)
IT WAS A BIG SUCCESS, AND DEREK WAS GREAT, THE VIBE WAS VERY STRONG AT THIS EVENT....NETWORKING WAS PERFECT. GOOD JOB CD BABY....YOU ROCK !!!!
    •  It was nice to talk to other musicians, I suppose, but I thought we would see more of the host, and hear more new info and more useful info. And he did not provide any refreshments for those attending; everyone had to buy their own in a fairly expensive venue.
    •  We were hoping to meet people from magazines or local papers. PR or marketing people. Mostly just bands, individual musicians, and people trying to sell their services.
    •  Thanks - I really enjoyed hearing Silver speak - was inspiring.
    •  Being able to meet other CD musicians was worth the while. To make this a great event, I recommend inviting a lot more media/industry people.
    •  Derek made a few points about marketing youself and your music that were very basic but also very important. We as musicians tend to forget that we can be the best publicists and managers of our own music because we know our own 'product" and our own fans better than anyone else.
    •  Terrific event, excellent networking, I announced my desire for a soul vocalist and got four promising responses, met a music publicist, got to exchange a nice moment with Derek about Sammy Cahn... and caught up socially with a few members of the NY Cabaret community. Suggestion: test microphone before using; the sound (to me) was muffled and indistinct; give speakers something to stand on. Great job, Derek. Look forward to the next one, and supplying you with more product. Best, John Meyer
    •  very necessary for us to gather and network and it was also very informative. Thanks... Can Fresh Records we're looking forward to the next 1 soon!!!
    •  Good group of people; great vibe in the room
    •  It was great to meet Derek and so many local folks I would not otherwise meet! Thanks so much.
    •  Derek's speech was the highlight. I took away a good amount of wisdom from it.
    •  Got to do a lot of networking, but would have been nice to have the event almost like a fair w/ tables & peoples info. to grab & go. Mr. Shivers' advice was good. Overall - good event. Great turn-out.
    •  I learned quite a bit and, although I was mostly introverted during the meeting, I still met some very interesting musicians. Definitely an eye-opener and the energy was very uplifting. I hope to attend these meetings on a regular basis.
    •  Derek hasn't changed a bit in 12 years though his pony tail is gone got to see some old friends ad make some new ones
    •  It was very crowded and noisy, making a bit hard to connect with people, but I met a few.
    •  Was a great way to meet Derek silvers and a few interesting artists and peolpe..would love to see it a better location next time round for an even t like this..
    •  meeting one another is always hard
    • Rew
i learned valuable thingz & met really special people..i left feeling happy i made it to the event & know i will see some of these people again & good thingz will definitely come from my being there. Hooray for CDBABY!!!
    • Victor Ezell (+2 guests)
The pace was too small for the event that was being held there.
    •  It made it easy to meet fellow musician artists and exchange cards/cds even for myself being a bit on the quiet side. Kudos!
    •  It was a great idea and I did meet some people and get some good tips.
    • TONY G.BARNES (+2 guests)
I THINK IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE INDUSTRY PEOPLE(VIDEO,RADIO AND CLUBS DJ PERSONNAL PRESENT).
    • dotmig (+4 guests)
The most exciting moment for me was so see Mr. Sivers socializing in the crowd, from the moment I walked in. I made it a point to introduce myself & bearing a personalized embroidered shirt with Derek's name on it, also the shirt stated. Derek say's DOTMIG is on CD Baby with the CD Baby logo & the face of my CD "Miami" on the logo as well. It was quite a thrill, Derek is such a courteous & intellectual man to meet. I also met photographers, musicians, songwriters that we already have exchanged emails to one another for future projects. Let's do it again real soon!! Could someone please put in a good word to the digital download companies in regards to DOTMIG'S "Miami" CD. Thank you-DOTMIG
    •  It was too loosely organized for me to get to know everybody. I've been to networking meetings where people would be given a mike and talk very briefly about themselves in a more controlled enviroment. At the break it was then easier to know who to run to and start chatting.
    •  Hi , I thought the meeting was informative up to the point Derek stopped speaking. If he wanted to hear from publicists or people in radio it should of been arranged to have someone from those fields speak at the meeting instead of some asshole pushing his anti-Bush agenda. It was at that point I'd had enough & left. Billy Cardinale Kill Van Kull
    •  This event was very helpful in many differrent ways, but one way in particular was so that people could be able to come together and connect to became a bigger voice in the music family, because their is power in numbers.
    • Marie O'Neill (+4 guests)
Good for networking and nice to have met Derek in the flesh!!!
    •  I had an amazing time! I thought that it was well organized and quite fun! I met people that I had heard of (and vice-versa) and people who I hope to know in the days and years to come! Everyone was pleasant and it was nice to be in an atmosphere of go-getters! Derek made some really impressive suggestions during his talk. I could hear his sincerity, and I truly appreciated it. Thanks so much for the invite! Rain- CT's First Lady of Hip Hop and RnB
    •  The venue was too small for the amount of people attending. It was very hard to move around and meet people let a lone breath. /after a while I went down stairs for air.
    •  A positive experience on several levels.
    •  i met a number of very nice people although it was kind of 'hit and miss', given the large number of people who attended, as to whether the particular folks you managed to strike up a conversation with were of musical styles that you were specifically looking for. for instance, i am a jazz guitarist, i was hoping to have met a lot of jazz singers looking for an accompanist and other jazz instrumentalists looking for guitar players for their bands. maybe name tags indicating your instrument and style and/or having specific areas of the room dedicated to specific musical styles would have been helpful.
    •  Derek's down-to-earth talk, opportunities and good vibes. Loved it!
    •  Wonderful meeting people to network with.
    •  The idea was great but the venue was too crowded to mingle. There should have been a stage with a better presentation and a pa so everyone could hear. New York is also a hassle to get too. parking etc. It's ok for NY people. Would like if you did a Jersey meeting. Some guest speakers with info would have been nice. The concept has potential. But there really wasn't room to move and talk.
    •  Folks were friendly. room was too dark. speakers with mics could not be seen and some not heard well enough. Needs a larger venue and better positioning of people with the mics...like a makeshift stage even. High point of the afternoon, I got to meet and shake the hand of Derek Sivers and thank him for the CD Baby concept. And ... he asked for my CD. The meetup concept is great, just needs refinement. The location was perfect, midtown Manhattan. THanks for doing it, despite my griping. Know that I would not have said anything if you had not asked. Devya
    •  Great networking opportunity. Everyone was really approachable and open to talk music.
    •  I sent my daughter on my behalf since I had a son graduating from college. She enjoyed meeting Derek and brought home some great pieces of advice! (My daughter is a writer for Conde Nast and lives in NYC so she is able to assist me a lot.) Thanks for a great meeting.
    •  Dereck , i think charging my 83 year old mother for my cd is a littel harsh. But all the rest of your insight's are helpfull, esspecially the part about the stranger the music the more it sells. peace ! louie
    •  I thought that the event was really good. It was a great chance to meet people, and it was good to see what others are doing. I thought that the comments by Derek Sivers added a lot- I got some useful tips from him, so I think that it is a good idea for him to say a few things- it helped make that event worthwhile. I also liked it when people got up to announce what services they provide. The only thing that I did not think was appropriate, and I may be alone in this- someone got up and announced a petiton for a political statement, ( bashing someone!) and I do not think that it is fair to use an event such as this to push one's political agenda. Not everyone may agree with it, and it really has nothing to do with helping one another promote their music career. I believe that the announcements should stick to music services, or information about upcoming gigs or concerts. If you could pass on to people to try to keep the politics out of these events, I think it would be a good idea.
    •  I felt that my time was well spent and I hope that it happens again.
    •  I One Two Entertainment, LLC www.IOneTwoEnt.com [masked] Thank you CD Baby and Connolly - your meet & greet was a great situation to meet artists and indies and find out what's up with 'em, and inform them 'bout "I One Two" and our roster of talented singers, rappers, screenwrites, producers, etc.! Peace, Sheri Esq.
    •  Bad venue.Bad sightlines. GOOD PEOPLE !!!!!!!!
    •  As far as writing and recording "weird songs with crazy sounds" I learned a lesson from Derek, that I don't have to write or record on those lines. However I learned for sure, that what I have to continue doing is writing what I feel at the same time, "being different from the usual!", like on my last CD "ANOTHER FEELING". A trio with No Bass and No Drums! Just Organic Percussion from the Amazon Rain Forest, piano and clarinet! My congratulations go to Derek and the people behind CD BABY - a great organization! Viva!
    • Vanessa Wharton (+1 guest)
I think a CD Baby tour would be a great event to organize! I loved the networking experience and your advise Derek on how to get your music recognized. Thank you for your time. Vanessa Wharton/ HerMajesty
    •  Very informative...it was great way to meet others in the music biz to share experiences and thoughts on so many aspects of music. Close to being a family event!
