CD Baby members are invited to Connolly's Pub and Restaurant in midtown Manhattan THIS SUNDAY May 6th at 1pm (done by 3pm) - for an informal meet-and-greet, hosted by CD Baby founder/president Derek Sivers.

(NOTE : we are doing the same get-together on both Saturday and Sunday, May 5 and 6, but please come to only one.)

In a room full of musicians and various music-biz types, it's best to bring some business cards and CDs, and be prepared to turn on your extroverted side for a couple hours, and introduce yourself to some new people.

For example: in past get-togethers like this, someone will stand up and say, "My name is Michelle - I'm a flamenco guitarist, available for hire if you need, and my band is looking for a photographer." Then someone else will stand up and say, "I'm launching a new music magazine and we're open for new submissions in all genres."

Also, there will be a 30-minute talk on "How to Call Attention to Your Music" by Derek Sivers.

Who attended?

  • 304 attendees
    •  Derek was cool, as were the other folks who attended. The bartender was great: he mixed a great vodka gimlet, which my wife enjoyed, and there was Guinness on draft, which worked just fine for me. The drinks were pricey, but hey, its New York. Connelly's is a bar we've been to before, it's a nice joint. If my memory serves me well, we saw Black 47 there a few years back. Derek's words of wisdom were to the point, and the only down side was that all of the people I spoke to were pretty much in the same boat as me, musicians looking for a way to get some press and sell some CDs. But then again, I really didn't expect to make any great music business contacts anyway, so I can't complain. Overall, it was a good time.
    •  It was really great meeting everyone. I want to be friends with all of you. If I didn't get to talk to you, please check me out http://www.scotta... or myspace.com/scottalexander
    •  Really took the time to meet some great people, networking and making new friends in the process. Can't wait to buddy half these people on myspace and listen to their music. What a great time!!!
    •  It was quite interesting. However, I mainly met other musicians - not people from organizations that might help us get our music out there. I did meet one, however, the company that plans to sell pre-loaded iPods. More opportunities like that would have been great. And a little more in the way of organized speakers or events. Musicians talking to musicians tends to turn into a complaint-fest as we all face the same issues. Overall, I think the most useful thing was the couple of success stories we were told. I would have enjoyed either hearing from the successful artists themselves (they should be available if CDBaby has helped them so much) or to be given more detailed information. Overall it was a pleasant experience but not one that I would say has changed either my perception that the people making the most money out of Indie music are not actually the musicians - or my belief that it still depends on lucky breaks. even the success stories usually boiled down to "knowing" someone!
    •  I arrived about an hour late - but from what I saw - I wished the promotion table was bigger and more noticeable so that anyone from any side of the room could view cd's, bios and promos.
    •  I thought that it was pretty well organized and there were a lot of people there; I met quite a few great people and just wish I had more time, but I had an audition at 4 p.m. and had to run. It was good to be in the room with so many artists on the same 'page' and interested in nothing more than getting themselves out there and sharing information. I actually can't think of any way it could have been better for a first meet. The talk wasn't too long and was very informative and opening the floor to others was a really cool thing to do.
    •  bigger space
    •  I thought that it was wonderful. Derek's presentation was informative and very enlightening. There is no better way to network with fellow professionals than to have first person contact with them!
    •  I think it would be great to recommend people to have a name tag with what they do on it. I didn't really know what to expect, that would be a great idea. Also, it could be cool to have a waiting list to be able to talk to Derek, with maybe a time limit...
    •  It was great to come early and stay late. I was able to speak with Derek and several other members of our community.
    •  Thank you Derek Silver for making yourself so accessible to us, and thanks for this great event. If I could think of one little improvement for the next one, it's this: If we could have name-tags so we know who we're talking to. It's difficult to catch everybody's name (and spelling) so we can check out their CDs on the site. It was a great privilege to speak with Derek.
    •  This was my first networking event in years. I thought it would be more formatted, but Derek kept it loose and relaxed. I also appreciated what he shared with us--great tips. Thanks, Derek.
    •  This was fantastic. It was great to meet so many fellow musiccians, and I really want to thank Derek for giving us an opportunity to introduce PodYourBand to all of the artists too.

Good but where were the industry people? It was a room full musicians. We need a room full of CD buyers, music presenters, booking agents, ad agencies or film makers.
    •  Very much enjoyed the chance to meet other artists in field; but wished there had been more dialogue with Mr. Siver - and/or pros on the "buying/marketing" side of the biz. will happily attend future "meets;" but urge more info from buyers, as well as Mr. Siver. Advice from him was terrific! How about an organization composed of us composers?
    •  Overall, I thought it went well. I don't suppose it would help to have name tags for this kind of event to help sort out who is who as far as singer, writer, etc.
    •  I really enjoyed meeting my peers and fellow artist. I also learned a few things. Can't wait until the next.
    • Lee McClure (+1 guest)
Derek said 2 things that stuck! Wierd is good and multiply calls or emails is respectful; one email isn't. So how do I market WIERD?
    •  Dear friends @ CDBABY, Thank you very much for this terrific event. I enjoyed the event very much & it was a great idea to bring all this music talent into one room. Personally It was very helpful to get additional insight Derek Sivers and to have a few more professional contacts. With deepest gratitude, Elvira
    •  It is great idea to have meetings like that, however, it would be more beneficial if those in attendence had a name tags identifying themself, their talent and what they are looking for.
    •  It wasn't too large of an event ( attendance wise) so that I could get a chance to talk to Derek , and it was easy to mingle and meet ( and talk with) a number of people. Keeping the comments to a minimum was a plus, since songwriters/ musicians seem to have a short attention span and can't keep their mouths shut ( just like when I am playing a gig!)
    •  it was great meeting with derek finallly he is doing a great job providing great tips thank you derek

I feel that there is kind of a Wild Wild West kind of thing going on right now for the Independent Musician Artist. - Meet-up forums like CD BABY's, allows to see all kinds of people who want to make music and allows us to view how each person is going about it. I do feel that more of an attempt should have been made to organize the room better, so that we could actually HEAR what people had to offer in terms of some of the services that are out there. That got chaotic. I would have liked to have heard more success stories about people who are selling their products through CD BABY. Other than that I thought it was a good afternoon of networking.
    •  Even though I arrived there late, I thought it was a very good event. Derek was so cool, and welcoming, and there were a lot of great artists, producers, etc. there. All were cool and down to earth. I hope he plans on having more of these events in the future.
    •  Great event. Met tons of great artists.
    •  Derek's comments were right on target. It was very enjoyable being in a roomful of "comrades." Several of us spoke about having a monthly gathering similar to yesterday's.
    •  Good networking opportunity.
    •  thanks so much derek - it was great
    •  excellent and would be happy o do so again!
    •  It was smart to make the note about bringing an extraverted attitude, it put everybody in that frame of mind. It did feel like a bunch of singer/songwriters trying to sell to each other at times, but there's a value in getting that practice and making those connections. And Derek's talk alone was worth coming out.
    •  a great networking event met some great people, met Derek too.
    •  It was a very positive meeting. Derek was very helpful. His advice was excellent.
    • david o. lovelace (+2 guests)
it would have been better if there were some refreshments and ice breaker fascilitation
    •  It felt like a Single's Scene! If you're shy, like me, you're not going to go up to people, so you have to wait for them to approach you. I think name tags (I know, I know...) with a few buzz words like "Hip Hop Folkie Songwriter" for example, might help level the playing field and make people more accessible to each other. Also, it gives you the opportunity to look people up later if you caught their name tag but perhaps didn't approach them.
    •  i believe you should be allowed to attend both days.i wonder what connects i missed on saturday.maybe some wuold have shown up on sunday when i attended.who knows what contacts could of been made.
    • frank Bruno (+1 guest)
many organizations have meetups but none have record exec. to mingle with. see if you can have the next meeting with record people who will be open to taking and LISTENING to demos. this would be great. thanks, s.f bruno
    •  The highlight for me was listening to Derek's points then getting a chance to speak with him and thank him.
    •  As I was stricken with a case of da drag ass i arrived maybe 215 or so... I missed any talk from Derek if there was one. He was ENGULFED by members and could've used someone with to help deal the meetngreet. It was a great opportunity for networking ..biz or pleasure...smile I didn't see any chairs out... A better location would be a banquet type room... preferably with a bar...fingerfood... Thanks
    •  Derek Sivers is a visionary.
    •  Being an introvert, it was a bit tough to just walk up to strangers, and try and peddle my wares. My partner and I did meet several nice people, one of whom hooked me up with a music registry web site, which will save me a lot of time in the future. Was glad Derek got up and gave some great pieces of advice, especially about following up/calling back people who I've sent my CD's to....just did that today, and got some positive feedback, and hopefully some exposure and $$$ down the road. Thanks Derek! Harry Kopy Those Dreaded Gnats
    •  it was great to see all musicians and mee Derek(CDbaby)
    •  it was nice to meet fellow artists and talk with them and Derek is really a cool guy
    • Robert Barone (+1 guest)
It seemed like a good idea I'd go to another one
    •  I really enjoyed it and was proud of myself for actually talking to people about what I do, and ASKING THEM questions about them. All in all I felt like it was an important thing to do. even though the woman I met on the subway going was a better person to meet - I like people who needs music for commercials!
    • JC (+1 guest)
I enjoyed it because I had the opportunity to meet some nice folks as well as Derek Sivers. I also liked the fact that it was less of a pressurized-type situation than I anticipated it might be.
    •  Dear Derek, I thought your talk was very helpful, sincere, and brought up things I wouldn't have thought of. When you said find out who books the club you want to play, and be persistant with follow up calls after you send your stuff.
    •  We should do it again 2x a year or every 3months
