Song circles are a great way to get a song "out there" in a setting that isn't quite as stressful as performing, and where members come with the idea of getting help, and being willing to help others, with perspective on songs we've written, suggestions for re-writes, new sections etc. So, it's a balance: all of us who write are likely to be sensitive about criticism but we also know we need critique if we are going to improve as songwriters, so a song circle must be comprised of people bold eno …

As writers, we sometimes need to get away from the everyday grind that monopolizes our time, energy and creativity. It helps if we can escape the "rat race" and rediscover the craft and pleasure of our writing in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. The Ohio Writers Retreats membership group was organized in 2009, to help us escape for a weekend or just a day. We'll feature, sponsor, co-sponsor and present writing retreats that offer getaway options closer to home, here in Ohio. The current weather …
There are a lot of activities in Pittsburgh that are free, or almost free - free days at museums, free concerts and films, free outdoors festivals, free cultural events ... . In addition to these (can't beat the price!), we'll post "almost free" ones where the cost is low (usually at most $5) compared to the fun that can be had. We're always looking for more ideas. If you have one, add it to our calendar as a "suggestion" ... and let me know so that I can turn it into a Meetup event.
